Sunglasses for Strong Prescriptions

Sunglasses for Strong Prescriptions

Now that the summer has finally arrived, we should all think about protecting our eyes from the harmful UV rays of the sun.

We all want a trendy pair of shades, but for those of us with strong or complex prescriptions, the choice is limited. For example, wrap around or Aviator style sunglasses are out of the question, because the size of these frames will make the lenses both thick and heavy.

There is however an alternative. Did you know that you can have a dark tint applied to any plastic high index lens and turn them into a cool pair of shades?  By choosing a plastic frame with high index lenses and opting for a tint you can have a pair of sunglasses that you will be proud to wear.

To make sure that you end up with a great looking pair of shades here are a few simple tips to follow:

  • Choose a full rimmed frame, preferably a plastic one, this will help to disguise any edge thickness in the lenses.
  • Go for a frame with a small lens diameter as this will reduce the total surface area of the lenses, making them thinner. This is beneficial for both short and long sighted prescriptions.
  • Although the frame needs to be small, you still need to ensure that it fits you. The ideal frame size for women is 47- 49mm whilst for men it is 50-52mm. For a comfortable fit check the size of your existing glasses, this is normally found on the inside arm or nose bridge e.g. 49-17-135 where 49  refers to lens diameter, 17 nose bridge and 135 arm length.
  • Regardless of  whether you need Single vision or Varifocal sunglasses there is a wide range of Plastic High Index Lenses to choose from. They are available in 1.61, 1.67 and 1.74 indexes.  If you want the thinnest & flattest lenses available, why not go for top of the range 1.74 Double Aspheric Lenses?

There are several tint colours to choose from. The most popular ones are grey, brown and blue so you can pick one that will compliment your frame and personality.  Remember no matter how strong or complex your prescription is. you can still have a trendy pair of prescription sunglasses that will help you to stand out from the crowd, by simply choosing the right combination of frame and high index lenses.
